EL1511 - AtkaNorthern Sea Otter
Enhydra lutris
2015
July 26, 2015June, 3rd 2016
A fisherman out of Ninilchik, Alaska caught more than fish on July 26, 2015, when he reported a male northern sea otter tangled in his fishing net. Approximately three months old at the time, Atka came to Alaska Sealife Center’s Wildlife Response Program with complications due to stress and did not respond well to human interaction at first. Through intense supportive care he responded very well to treatment, and he is currently healthy and awaiting permanent placement. Atka’s story is a good example of how human lives can have an impact on animals around them. It is not always natural environmental factors that cause animals to enter into the response program, but manmade nets, debris, and hazards can also greatly affect the lives of marine mammals.
