Science Spotlight

Overview

Pollution and climate change are affecting environments worldwide and methods are needed to monitor their impacts on coastal ecosystems. Bay mussels are found along the majority of coastlines, and they are sessile filter-feeders that bioaccumulate environmental contaminants. These qualities of mussels make them useful for monitoring programs. Therefore, we developed methods to use bay mussels in coastal monitoring programs in arctic and subarctic environments.
