PV1306Pacific Harbor Seal
Phoca vitulina
2013
June 15, 2013April, 12th 2015
This seal pup was found on a beach near Earthquake Park in Anchorage, AK. After observing the for a few hours, it was determined that the pup needed to be admitted. Airport Wildlife Control and Noah M. of NOAA were a big help in managing the pup until ASLC staff could arrive. June 16, 2013April, 12th 2015
After arriving at the Center, the approximately 7 day old male pup has been treated for a very small flipper wound, and dehydration. He had a low temperature, and so he was given a hot water bottle, and our staff continues to observe him closely. June 17, 2013April, 12th 2015
Our newest pup is eating well, and his temperature seems to have stabilized. He is very vocal, and is already swimming is some slightly warm water. June 20, 2013April, 12th 2015
It was a beautiful day at the Center today, so PV 1306 spent the day outside in a condo. He seemed to enjoy the extra space and the vocalizations of other seals nearby. He has been having a little more difficulty with his feeds than other seals, so we are watching his diet carefully. June 26, 2013April, 12th 2015
Over the past few days, the pup has had a few issues with his feeds. He has regurgitated a bit of formula occasionally, and staff has noticed some discharge from his eyes. Based on these signs, vet staff decided to do a series of x-rays to look at the pup's esophagus and gastrointestinal system. From these x-rays, we were able to determine that the pup has a condition called Mega-esophagus. This means his esophagus is enlarged, and has developed pockets that catch food as she swallows it, rather than flowing directly into the stomach. This is the cause of his feeding difficulty, and complications of mega-esophagus could be life threatening. He is being treated with a GI motility medication, as well as antibiotics to avoid a potential infection. June 29, 2013April, 12th 2015
After being in critical condition for the last few days, we are sorry to report that PV1306 has passed. A full necropsy will be preformed to attempt to determine cause of death.
